Gavlak
West Palm Beach, Florida
March 24, 2006- May 14, 2006

I exhibited 7 photographs of small businesses and 5 sweaters at Gavlak in sunny Florida.

The photographs are part of an ongoing photographic series celebrating small businesses. The prints are 30"x 40" each.

Native Angeleno Matty Byloos showed paintings in the rear section of the gallery. His paintings combined architectural details with formalist and somewhat decorative stripes and brushstrokes. Despite obvious differences, our work looked quite lovely together. It also helped that the rear portion of the gallery, Matty's paintings, the invitation card, and my pants all matched in color. The first thing I learned when I landed in West Palm Beach is that pink is regarded as a neutral.

My site-specific sweaters all stated "Everything I Touch Turns to $old" on the front. They were visible through the front window. At first glance, a passerby might think Gavlak to be a sweater store.

The backs of the sweaters had text which correlated to the amount of gold knit into the sweater. The more gold, the more the sweater says it costs.

Some details that drove me crazy with happiness: the shadows thrown on the clean white floor when the afternoon sun poured into the front window.

And the ABC Liquor sign through the front window, looking just so lovely with the signs on the banner business in the photograph.
